Investors in cryptocurrencies are mostly young men with no trading or investment experience, according to a survey conducted by eToro, a forex and cryptocurrency social trading platform. It was conducted between March 2017 and February 2018 among eToro users investing in various cryptocurrency products offered by the platform.

Most of the people who dabble in crypto trading work in the IT/Computer sector, or in sales and marketing. There are also quite a few students and finance industry specialists, but many have no occupation at all. Pensioners are least interested segment in crypto investments, according to the survey.

EToro also found that young people, aged 18-23, show the greatest interest in crypto investments, followed by the 24-35 age group. With the advancement of age, the enthusiasm for cryptocurrencies fades.

EToro’s survey found that 91.5% of its clients, who trade in cryptos or their derivatives, are male.

The results revealed that the most preferred cryptocurrencies, at least by the eToro clients, are Ripple, Bitcoin and Ether.

When it comes to preferences of women and men for the various cryptocurrencies, eToro’s survey found some interesting facts. Excluding Bitcoin, where there is no gender difference, women are proportionally more likely to invest in Ripple and NEO, while men are more interested in Litecoin, Ether Classic and Bitcoin Cash.

In its study, eToro also did an analysis on the average profitability of the investments in the various cryptocurrencies it offers, as long-term yields and “quick wins”. The results show that Ripple, Ether and Litecoin have the highest average profitability of 8%, 6% and 3%, respectively. At the other end is Bitcoin Cash with a negative profitability of -4%, Stellar and Neo with around -1% each.

eToro is a major social trading and investment platform with over 10 million users. It offers trading in various financial products, such as currencies, indices, stocks, commodities, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and derivatives. In 2017 the platform, which is regulated by UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Cyprus Securities Exchange Commission (CySEC) ventured into cryptocurrencies. It started offering “crypto copyfunds” that include a combination of various cryptocurrencies, as well as crypto pairs. Currently, eToro’s crypto portfolio includes Bitcoin, Ether, Dash, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ripple, Ether Classic, Stellar, EOS and NEO. They can be traded against some of the major currencies.
